PHQ-9 is a globally recognized screening tool for major depressive disorder. Each of the nine questions directly corresponds to one of the nine DSM-IV/DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for depression — which is why this questionnaire is considered one of the most accurate among short tests of this type.
This test has been validated in over a hundred scientific studies with a combined sample of more than 50,000 participants.
The questionnaire is included in the clinical protocols of the Mayo Clinic, the UK's NHS, Mental Health America, and the World Health Organization's mhGAP program.
Important to understand: this is a screening, not a diagnosis
The PHQ-9 helps assess the likelihood and severity of symptoms, but it does not replace a consultation with a specialist. Only a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist can make a final diagnosis after a personal evaluation.
Think of this test as a first, clear step — it gives you and a future specialist a shared language for talking about your condition.
